Graphics, etcetera.

Anchoring the page.

After the relatively heavy tone of recent pieces here's something light and inconsequential. In 'I saw it on tv.' we explained the quirky thumbnail+title+logline presentation of the onsite articles.

Completely overlooked until now is the issue of those large block graphics heading the main column.

They're there to provide a strong visual element, and in doing so draw the eye to a point of focus. (Sounds bollocks, but it's true.) Without 'em, the grid is a lot less defined.

Why didn't we just play it straight and use 'normal' stock images rather than entirely irrelevant frippery? 'World's already full of enough dull people taking themselves too seriously…' we didn't want to.

That's a lead I got from Jeffrey, who's also sticking to a sensible two-column grid rather than the seemingly de-rigeur 'let's have three and a million links'.
